The Chums

Rita Lupino and Ida Lupino

1934

The fever returned. This time it was partially emotional. I couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t think, didn’t care. Olivia, in the United States on a lecture tour, and Sister O’Hara nursed me at Sister’s house in Quogue. Because of her marital difficulties with her second husband, Pierre Galante, my sister seemed able to understand what I was going through. Olivia undressed me, put me to bed, held me in her arms as she sang a Japanese lullaby from our childhood … “Nen, nen, korori, okororiyo.” Still the tears would not stop.

Maybe it was someone from the film crew ;) judging by the year, she was under contract with RKO.

You’re probably right. Frankly, if I were on the crew at RKO and had the chance to sit and watch Joanie doing her makeup, I would…

I remember that! I have a feeling that as a person, Joan is really nice. I get that sense from reading her book and reading other little anecdotes about her. She definitely doesn’t take any guff, and she’s a straight-talker, but she seems very generous and genuinely nice.

I’m so proud of the way Joan is! she’s liberal, independient, intellectual, she loves animals ♥ and above all, she’s very human. She has never forgotten the people who helped her while she was an unknown to Hollywood, and the people in general who once gave her a hand with something. She never had this weird things that starlets nowadays have like saying ‘Don’t look at me, I’m the star ok, I’m better than you’ or doing drugs and that kind of shit. I’m just so relieved that she and Olivia were always two healthy girls :)

I totally agree about Joan and Olivia!  First off, I do think they (I know more about Joan, but I assume it’s the same with Olivia) are very nice people.  The more I read about them, the more I think the feud between them is… well, not fabricated, but exaggerated.  Like I’d always read the quote from Joan’s book about when her name was called as the Oscar winner and Olivia was telling her to go up, and Joan was paralyzed and flashed back to all their sibling fights as children, but no one ever quotes the following paragraph (which I’ll post later) about how Joan felt that Olivia really handled the situation well as it must have been difficult for her to handle, which I’m sure it was!  Even if it’s your best friend you’re up against, it’s hard to not have AT LEAST a twinge of jealousy if she wins.  Anyway, I think it comes down to respect.  The liking of the “little people” aka the crew etc. has to do with respect.  There’s no sense of being holier than thou, which I think is really important, because it’s not like the crew work any less hard or what they do is less important!  OK, that’s my rant, which basically just says I agree with you! :D

This picture is unbearably sad.  Look at Joan’s face!  And look at the way Olivia is clutching the award.  She’s like “no way, sissy, this one is mine!”
