Famous Film Partnerships: Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland (1935 - 1941)

The Flynn - De Havilland partnership was one that produced a wide and varying range of films. From the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Blood and Robin Hood, to the high society comedy of Four’s a Crowd. Notably, all but one (They Died With Their Boots On) were directed by Michael Curtiz.

“Life is too full of events of great importance. That is more absorbing and enriching than a fantasy life - I don’t need a fantasy life as once I did. That is the life of the imagination that I had a great need for. Films were the perfect means for satisfying that need.”

Following de Havilland’s legal victory, Warner Bros. made sure its remaining contract player Ida Lupino received top billing when the Curtis Bernhardt-directed 1943 drama Devotion, about the Brontë sisters (Lupino, de Havilland, and Nancy Coleman), was finally released in 1946.
