Coop Appreciation: 30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 30

garycooperappreciation:

Day 30- Which 5 Old Hollywood stars would you invite to dinner

Well, there are two I know you can guess: Ida Lupino and Gary Cooper.  The other ones would be a little more difficult, but I think I’ll go with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward (just because I like them as a couple.  I have a feeling that I would ignore Joanne though… :-/) And in the final spot… I’m tempted to go with Errol Flynn, but after reading what he did on Louella Parsons’s door, I’m a little wary… perhaps I’ll go with Jimmy Stewart :)

So, I guess that would be my (very small) dinner party.  First of all, I would like to thank you for putting up with my meme spam, which is now complete (this one, anyway).  Secondly, who would you invite to a dinner?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 28

garycooperappreciation:

Day 28- A movie you never expected yourself to enjoy

High Noon.  I don’t like westerns, and hadn’t yet realized my love of Gary Cooper.  I had heard it wasn’t really a “western,” but I was dubious.  Once I saw the movie, I realized it was true.

How about you guys?  What movie did you not expect to like?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 27

Day 27- Who’s death hit you the hardest and why

I think I have to say Tony Curtis because it was the most recent, and he was always so lively and vibrant, as well as one of my favorites.

I was sad when Jack Lemmon died, and Paul Newman.  Oh, and Frank Sinatra!  The thing is, I saw Jack Lemmon once before he died.  He was in the waiting room with me at the vet.  I was very excited, but I didn’t talk to him.  I don’t remember if I pet his dog (that sounds wrong…), a Poodle, but I always liked him, so that was upsetting.  I saw Sinatra once before he died, in a restaurant, but I certainly didn’t talk to him.  I also wasn’t that huge a fan at that time (I was around 11 or 12.  I didn’t get into him until around age 14 or 15).  Paul Newman, I was upset because he seemed like such an awesome guy, and also because I feel bad for Joanne Woodward.  I guess those are the main ones.

How about you guys?

Day 26- Which unsolved scandal would you most like the answer to

As ever, so many, but these are things I really want to know:

Day 26- Which unsolved scandal would you most like the answer to

As ever, so many, but these are things I really want to know:

-Well, it’s not a scandal, but I want to know all of the things I don’t understand about Ida Lupino’s life.  What was her relationship like with her daughter, and what was her relationship with Howard Duff really like?

-The real story behind Errol Flynn’s dalliances with underage girls (also, did he and Olivia de Havilland, or didn’t they?)

-Which of Coop’s alleged affairs are legitimate?  I know he was with Patricia Neal, obviously, but did he actually have an affair with Ingrid Bergman?

-What really happened to Thelma Todd?  Who did it?

-How do Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine really feel about each other?

-What really happened to Natalie Wood?

I guess that’s enough, although I’m sure that I’m forgetting something very important, but oh well.  What about you guys?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 25

Day 25- Which character from a film do you fantasize about being

As usual, the answer to this one isn’t single and simple, HOWEVER, unlike most answers, I will choose only one, because I can’t think of any character more appealing to be than Leslie Benedict (Elizabeth Taylor) in Giant (1955).  I’m not into cowgirl stuff (although I love horses), but I am into having both Rock Hudson and James Dean in love with you and living happily ever after with a large, loving family.

I also wouldn’t turn my nose up at looking like Elizabeth Taylor… what character do you fantasize about being?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 24

Day 24- Favorite film from Hollywood’s greatest year, 1939

I can’t pick one… as usual.  So, I go with the following, all of which I really like:

Gone with the Wind

The Wizard of Oz

Wuthering Heights

Love Affair

Midnight

Dark Victory

What’s your favorite film from 1939?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 23

Day 23- A film you think is underrated

There are many I think are underrated, but possibly none more than The Big Knife.  It is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, hands down, on so many levels and I would have never even heard of it had it not been for my obsession with Ida Lupino.  If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.  It’s rather moving and just very interesting and seems like a good view into the studio system’s corruption.  The direction is extremely interesting from an aesthetic point of view and the acting can’t be beat.  It’s basically just an incredible film, and I do not understand why it isn’t on the curriculum of every film school.  If you are in or went to film school and they had you watch this movie, please let me know, because I would be so happy to know it gets recognition somewhere!

What film do you think is underrated?

Day 22- If you could go back in time and trade places with an Old Hollywood star, who would it be

I was contemplating this one, and I obviously relate more to the women, but I wouldn’t have traded lives with any of them because of everything they were up against, and how they were treated… even the powerful ones!  The person I think I could most see trading places with would have been Gary Cooper.  He died far too young (at only 60, after being ill for a long time), and I don’t necessarily approve of all of his romantic dalliances, but EVERYBODY liked him.  He seemed to almost always get what he wanted, without having to hurt anyone else or burn any bridges, and it speaks volumes that no one disliked him, even women he had previously had affairs with.  That almost never happens.  I strive to please everyone while still getting what I want, so I really respect that he didn’t take any crap, but still was beloved by all.

Who would you like to trade places with?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 21

Day 21- Old Hollywood couple you’d watch a sex tape of

Well, I don’t know if I would watch a sex tape of them, but possibly the most beautiful couple would have to be Warren Beatty & Natalie Wood, so I’ll have to go with them…

Who would it be for you?

Day 20- Favorite Silent film star

I’m so predictable.

[^gif by me]

Gary Cooper… but another silent actor who I think was beautiful was Charles Farrell although I somehow STILL haven’t seen any of his films!  How negligent of me.

Who’s your favorite silent star?

Day 19- Who’d you like to party it up with in the afterlife

I think we all know the answer to this question.  Of course there are others I would like to chill with there, but top two:

Ida Lupino

and

Gary Cooper

How about you?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 18

Day 18- Actor or Actress who should have won an Oscar

I think we all know the answer to this. Ida Lupino for any number of performances.  Especially The Hard Way and The Big Knife, and pretty much any of her directorial masterpieces.

So, who do you think should’ve won an Oscar who didn’t?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 17

Day 17- Favorite line from a film

As usual, you can’t possibly expect me to choose just one!  I will limit my answer to two, however, so as to avoid inciting suicidal tendencies in you. :)

From The Barefoot Contessa (1954):

Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies, when everything fits too well - the beginning, the middle, the end - from fade-in to fade-out.

From Sunset Boulevard (1950)

Audiences don’t know somebody sits down and writes a picture; they think the actors make it up as they go along.

OK, I lied… I remembered a third quote I must include… let’s all hope I can’t think of any more…

From Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Don’t you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty?

You wouldn’t marry a girl just because she’s pretty, but my goodness, doesn’t it help?

And there you have it.  Three of my top quotes from fabulous classic films.  I have far too many to count, but here’s a spattering.  What are your favorite quotes?

30 Days of Old Hollywood: Day 16

Day 16- Favorite director

Well, in my gut, I think we both know who I have to say: Ida Lupino!

However, since it’s next to impossible for me to pick a simple answer for any of these questions, I must also tell you that I love the following directors as well: Alfred Hitchcock, Frank Capra, Billy Wilder, Elia Kazan, David Lean, James Whale, oh and John Huston and William Wyler!… those are the only ones that spring to mind immediately, but yeah.
